A step-by-step guide to improve self-esteem (free worksheets included)

If you are here because you want to work on your self-esteem I want you to know that this is possible.

What you should keep in mind is that this may not be an easy road, but if you persist, it will get better.

Another important thing is that you always need to be honest when working on yourself.

When you are busy filling out these worksheets, you will be in your own private space so you should be able to be completely honest with yourself.

Having low self-esteem has many causes so it can be only one cause or more than one. If you want to learn more about the causes of low self-esteem you can go to this post What are the causes and signs of low self-esteem and how to overcome it.

Now let’s have a look at some steps you can take to improve your low self-esteem.

A step-by-step guide to improving self-esteem

Below you will find a step-by-step guide that will help you with improving your self-esteem. We also have some worksheets included for you.

Step 1: Find out how you see yourself

Before you can work on improving your self-esteem, you have to figure out how you see yourself. Once you realize how you see yourself, you will have an idea of what you need to work on.

This Self-Esteem Worksheet will assist you when it comes to how you see yourself and what you need or would want to work on.

Step 2: Write down negative thoughts you have about yourself

At this step, you will have to write down all the negative thoughts that you have about yourself. It is important that you sit and think about what to write here.

For the first time in this Worksheet to challenge negative thoughts you will be able to write down the negative thoughts.

When you are done with this, you can move to step 3.

Step 3: Write down positive thoughts to challenge those negative thoughts

Now that you wrote down all the negative thoughts about yourself, you should now write down at least one positive attribute about yourself, that will cancel out those negative thoughts.

Some prompts that you can use to write down positive attributes are:

I love that I can _______

I love that I am _______

I am so happy because  _______

I am so happy that I can _______

So now that you have looked within yourself it is time for you to look at the people that you surround yourself with in the next step.

Step 4: Write down people in your life that make you feel bad

The reason why this is one of the steps is because it is important that you have a good self perception, but the people that you surround yourself with also have an effect on you.

So on this list we would like for you to make a list of the people in your life that you feel make you feel bad in any way. You can put a reason why, but you don’t have to.

This is what you can write down on the first part of this People in my life worksheet. Once you are done writing down these names you can move on to step 5.

Step 5: Write down people in your life that make you feel good

Now that you wrote down the names of the people that are making you feel bad, it is time to write down the names of the people that make you feel good. This can be done on the second part of the People in my life worksheet.

These are the people that encourage you and build you up.

Once you have these names you will have to figure out if you want to cut off the negative people in your life or if you want to salvage or work on your relationship with them.

You can then also think of ways that you can spend more time with the people that make you feel good and cut the time you spend with people that make you feel bad.

So now that you have focused on the people around you for a bit, you need to get back and focus on yourself again. Step 6 has a way that you can use to make yourself feel better when you’re feeling down.

Step 6: Write down positive affirmations to say daily

When you are feeling down on yourself it is a good idea to say affirmations back to yourself.

You can use this Positive Affirmations Worksheet to write down positive affirmations.

We have some prompts that you can use to write down some positive affirmations.

The affirmations are as follows:

I am enough.
